Question 1

What does BEAUTY + BALANCE cover?

Accepted Answer

BEAUTY + BALANCE is the BONO pillar for skin, hair and hormones. It holds two kinds of goals. The first is visible upkeep: hair, skin and nails, hair loss, and ageing skin, with nutrients such as zinc, biotin and vitamin C, plus collagen. The second is hormonal life stages: the menstrual cycle, the menopause, prostate and testosterone, libido, and pregnancy or trying to conceive. One page, so you can start from your goal instead of from an ingredient name.

Question 2

Which nutrients are linked to normal hair, skin and nails?

Accepted Answer

A few nutrients have approved claims in this area. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, and vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. UK reference intakes for adults give you a sense of scale.

Nutrient	Men (19-64)	Women (19-64)
Zinc	9.5 mg	7 mg
Selenium	75 mcg	60 mcg
Vitamin A	700 mcg	600 mcg
Vitamin C	40 mg	40 mg
Iodine	140 mcg	140 mcg

Question 3

Which collagen form should I choose?

Accepted Answer

The choice is mostly practical, because the daily amount is measured in grams rather than milligrams. Powder is the workhorse, capsules suit travel, and ready-to-drink shots suit people who dislike stirring. Marine collagen comes from fish, bovine collagen from cattle.

Nutrient	Men (19-64)	Women (19-64)
Zinc	9.5 mg	7 mg
Selenium	75 mcg	60 mcg
Vitamin A	700 mcg	600 mcg
Vitamin C	40 mg	40 mg
Iodine	140 mcg	140 mcg

Question 4

How long before I notice anything?

Accepted Answer

Longer than most product pages suggest. Nails grow around 3 mm a month and scalp hair about a centimetre, so new growth needs time to become visible. We tell people to give a hair, skin or nail product two to three months of daily use before judging it, and a cycle or menopause formula two to three cycles. A useful trick: take a photo of your nails or hairline at the start, because memory is a poor measuring tool.

Question 5

Can I combine several products from this pillar?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes, as long as you watch overlap. Many beauty formulas already contain zinc, selenium and biotin, and a multivitamin will contain them too. Adding both is not more effective, it just pushes you towards the upper limits. Our rule of thumb: one base product plus one targeted product. Collagen combines easily with almost anything, because it is protein rather than a vitamin or mineral. If you take medication, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

Question 6

Is there a vegan alternative to collagen?

Accepted Answer

Not a like-for-like one, and we would rather say so. Collagen is an animal protein, so marine and bovine are the real options; "vegan collagen" products contain building blocks and cofactors, not collagen itself. What does have an approved claim is vitamin C: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. So a vegan route usually means vitamin C plus zinc and silica, which is a genuine choice, not a copy of collagen powder.

Question 7

What should I be careful with when pregnant or trying to conceive?

Accepted Answer

Two things matter most. UK guidance advises 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from before conception until the twelfth week of pregnancy. And high-dose vitamin A should be avoided in pregnancy, which also means skipping liver and fish liver oils such as cod liver oil. That is why pregnancy multivitamins use a low or beta-carotene form of vitamin A. Everything else, including herbal products, is worth checking with your midwife.

Question 8

What does this pillar offer men?

Accepted Answer

More than most beauty ranges suggest. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood and to normal fertility and reproduction. Plant products such as saw palmetto and nettle root are traditionally used by men from around forty, and you will find them grouped in our prostate range. Hair loss also sits in this pillar, including topical routines, because many men come to us for the scalp before the supplement.

Question 9

Why do you cap the dose on some products instead of stocking the strongest version?

Accepted Answer

Because more is not automatically better, and some nutrients have a ceiling. Vitamin A is the clearest example: UK guidance says not to take more than 1.5 mg a day from food and supplements combined, since it builds up in the body. Fat-soluble nutrients behave differently from water-soluble ones. So we look at the whole daily total, including what a multivitamin already delivers, and we stock forms and doses that make sense for long-term use rather than a headline number on the label.
