Cysteine is an amino acid naturally present in protein-rich foods. NAC is a modified form of cysteine with an added acetyl group. This forms a more stable compound that is widely used in supplements.
Cysteine naturally occurs in protein-rich foods such as chicken, turkey, beef, eggs, dairy products, fish, legumes, and some nuts and seeds.
NAC is technically not an amino acid, but a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. It is therefore often described as a stabilised form of cysteine.
NAC contains sulphur as part of its natural chemical structure. As a result, NAC supplements may have a characteristic odour sometimes described as sulphurous. This is a normal property of the ingredient.
The RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport): Adults may consume a maximum of 1200 milligrams of N-acetylcysteine per day (this is equivalent to 2 capsules of this product). For children aged 2 to 18 years the maximum amount is lower. Furthermore, the RIVM advises not to use these supplements for children under two years of age.
