Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid, a pigment found in certain microalgae and marine organisms. It is responsible for the pink to reddish colour of salmon, trout, shrimp and krill, among others.
Astaxanthin naturally occurs in microalgae, salmon, trout, shrimp, lobster and krill. Marine organisms obtain astaxanthin through their diet, usually from algae that naturally produce this compound.
Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater microalga known as one of the richest natural sources of astaxanthin. For this reason, this alga is widely used worldwide as a raw material for astaxanthin supplements.
The pink colour of salmon comes from astaxanthin. In the wild, salmon get this carotenoid through their natural diet, including small crustaceans and algae.
Astaxanthin and beta-carotene both belong to the carotenoids but have different chemical structures. Beta-carotene is mainly found in orange and yellow vegetables, while astaxanthin is mainly found in microalgae and marine organisms.
Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble carotenoid. That’s why the manufacturer recommends taking the capsule preferably with a meal, especially when this meal contains fats. Fat-soluble substances are often combined with dietary fats as part of the daily diet.
