Nature’s Way Chaste Tree 400 mg (100 or 320 capsules) contains 400 mg of chaste tree fruit (Vitex agnus-castus) per capsule. Chaste tree, also known as monk’s pepper, is a flowering shrub naturally found in the Mediterranean region. The plant has lilac to purple-blue flower spikes and small, dark berries reminiscent of peppercorns. Only the fruits are used for this supplement, processed in easy-to-take capsules suitable for vegans. The manufacturer recommends taking 1 capsule two to three times per day for the first 8 to 12 weeks, then 1 capsule per day.
Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is a shrub or small tree from the mint family. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Central Asia. It enjoys sunny locations, often along riverbanks and coasts.
The berries have a slightly spicy, peppery flavour. According to tradition, monks in the Middle Ages used the dried berries as a substitute for pepper. That is where the name monk’s pepper comes from.
The berries contain, among others, agnuside and casticin, two compounds named after the plant. They also contain essential oil with cineole, which is also found in eucalyptus. This oil gives the berries their spicy, peppery scent.
Traditionally, mainly the berries of chaste tree have been used. These contain the characteristic plant compounds. The fruit is also listed in the European Pharmacopoeia, the official reference work for quality standards of raw materials.
Besides chaste tree, the capsule contains two excipients. Magnesium stearate ensures the powder runs smoothly through the production machines. Silica prevents the powder from clumping. The capsule shell is plant-based.
