What a lash serum does, and what it cannot do
A lash serum is a cosmetic liquid you brush along the base of your upper lashes, usually once a day before bed. Most formulas work in two ways. They condition the hair itself, so lashes snap off less often. And they aim to keep the follicle in its growth phase a little longer, which gives each lash more time to reach its full length.
Your lashes run through a cycle of growing, resting and shedding. Not all of them are in the same phase at once. That is why change appears slowly and unevenly. Expect the first differences after four to six weeks, and the fuller picture after about twelve weeks of daily use. Results hold as long as you keep applying. Stop, and lashes drift back to their own baseline over the next few cycles. That is how hair behaves, not a fault in the product.
Two ingredient routes, one important difference
The gentler route uses peptides (short chains of amino acids), panthenol and plant extracts. These condition the lash line and support the natural cycle. They work gradually and rarely darken the lashes. You will find this route across most of our lash and brow range.
The second route uses prostaglandin analogues: lab-made copies of a hormone-like substance from eye medicines. They act on the follicle directly and give faster length. They are also the reason this category is under scrutiny. In 2024 the UK authority for product safety had lash serums on the British market analysed for these ingredients. Reported effects include a darkening of the eyelid rim, changes in iris colour and loss of fat around the eye. At night, on clean and dry skin, after removing all make-up. Draw one thin line along the base of your upper lashes, as you would a fine eyeliner. One dip is enough for both eyes, and going back in twice only shortens the life of the bottle. Skip the lower lash line, since product there tends to migrate into the eye. More serum does not speed anything up, it simply raises the chance of irritation.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, most brands advise against use, simply because these formulas are not tested in that group. We pass that advice on rather than talk around it.
