Granules

Granules are supplements ground or dried into coarse grains: bigger than a fine powder, smaller than a tablet. You measure them with a spoon or tear open a sachet. That makes the form useful for ingredients you take by the gram, such as soy and sunflower lecithin, hydrolysed collagen, psyllium husk and brewer's yeast. Taking the same amount as capsules would mean swallowing a small handful.

Particle size decides how a supplement fits your day

Next to a fine loose powder, granules dust less and clump less. They sink into yoghurt, porridge or a smoothie instead of sticking to the side of the glass. The trade-off is speed: granules dissolve slower in cold water, so many people eat them with food rather than drink them. The ingredient itself does the same work in both forms. What changes is how easy it is to take the right amount every day, and that is usually what decides whether a supplement is still in use after a month.

What you find in this collection

Most granule products fall into a few groups:

• Lecithin granules, made from soy or sunflower lecithin, with phosphatidylcholine as the main component (a natural fat-like substance from the seed).
• Fibre granules such as psyllium husk, always taken with plenty of water.
• Collagen and protein granules, coarse grains that mix in quickly.
• Single-dose sachets with vitamin C or minerals, poured straight onto the tongue without water.

Read the label for the amount per spoon, not per 100 grams. A heaped spoon can hold nearly twice as much as a level one, so brands that state grams per level spoon make daily use simpler. Check the carrier too: some granules use added sugar, sweeteners or maltodextrin to hold their shape. That is not a problem in itself, but at gram-sized daily doses it is worth knowing what you are eating.

How we choose granules

We look at three things before a granule product joins the assortment: the form of the ingredient, the dose per spoon or sachet, and whether the combination makes sense. With lecithin we prefer products that state the phosphatidylcholine content, because the word lecithin on its own says little. With fibre we check that one scoop matches a realistic daily amount, so you are not eating six spoons to get there. We buy directly from the brands, every product passes our compliance team, and we test batches ourselves while independent labs spot-check. Read how we select brands and products.

Granules suit you if you dislike swallowing capsules, if your dose runs into grams, or if you want to stir something into breakfast without thinking about it. They travel less easily: a jar and a spoon are bulkier than a blister strip. They are also the wrong choice for nutrients dosed in micrograms, such as vitamin D or B12, where drops or a small tablet are more precise. With fibre and lecithin, give it two to three weeks of daily use before you judge the result, and keep the spoon in the jar so the habit sticks.
