What to look for in a sage leaf extract
Sage leaf comes from Salvia officinalis, the same herb that goes into a Sunday roast. Supplements use the dried leaf, almost always as a concentrated extract. Two words keep coming back on labels: rosmarinic acid, a plant compound used to measure how strong an extract is, and thujone, an aromatic compound that careful producers remove.
Most confusion starts with the big number on the front of the pack. A tablet that says 3000 mg does not contain 3000 mg of sage. It usually holds around 500 mg of a 6:1 extract, meaning six parts of leaf were concentrated into one. Both numbers are honest, but only one is in the tablet. So compare the extract weight and the ratio, and use the rosmarinic acid figure when a brand states it. You will find sage next to dozens of other botanical supplements in our range.
The forms differ more than the price suggests
Tablets and capsules with a standardised extract give you the same amount every day, which makes them easy to judge over several weeks. Drops and tinctures work faster into a routine if you dislike swallowing tablets, and you can adjust the amount drop by drop. Sage tea gives a much lighter, less predictable amount of the same leaf. Sage essential oil is a different product entirely and is not meant to be swallowed.

For a fair trial over several weeks, a standardised tablet or capsule is the easiest to judge.
Read it twice. A pack labelled 3000 mg or 4000 mg is nearly always quoting the dried leaf equivalent, not the tablet contents. The real figures are the extract weight and the ratio: 500 mg of a 6:1 extract equals 3000 mg of leaf, and 400 mg of a 10:1 extract equals 4000 mg. Neither is better by default. What matters is that both numbers are printed, plus the rosmarinic acid content, so you can compare like with like.
Take it with a meal, as most brands advise, because the extract sits more comfortably on a full stomach. Follow the amount on the pack and do not double up to speed things along; more is not better with concentrated botanicals. Some people prefer the evening if night-time sweating is their reason for trying it, others split a two-tablet dose across the day. Pick one pattern and stick to it, otherwise you cannot tell what is working.
Plan on six to eight weeks of consistent daily use before you decide. In user reports the spread is wide: some describe a change within a week or two, others only after roughly two months, and some notice nothing at all. Buying a single small pack usually leaves you guessing, which is why a longer supply is often the more sensible purchase. Keep a short note of how you feel weekly; it beats relying on memory.
Thujone is a naturally occurring aromatic compound in sage, and intake of it is restricted in food and drink. Concentrated leaf products can carry more of it than a pinch of cooking herb, so many manufacturers reduce or remove it and test each batch. That is why you see thujone-free on packs. We favour suppliers who can show batch documentation for this, and independent labs spot-check batches for us as well.
Ask your GP or pharmacist first, and take the pack with you so they can see the extract and the amount. This is the most common question we get about sage, and it is not one a shop should answer for you. The same applies if you take medication for blood pressure, blood sugar or epilepsy, or if you are being treated for a hormone-sensitive condition. Sage supplements are also not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Neither is automatically better, but they answer different questions. Single-ingredient sage tells you exactly how much extract you take, so if it suits you, you know what to buy again. A complex with sage, red clover, vitamin B6 and magnesium may be more convenient, yet the sage share is often small and sometimes unstated.
