What hawthorn berry actually is
Hawthorn is a thorny shrub in the rose family. Crataegus monogyna and Crataegus laevigata grow in hedgerows across Britain, and their small red fruits are called haws. The berries contain oligomeric proanthocyanidins, usually shortened to OPCs: plant compounds that also occur in grape seed and pine bark. Flavonoids sit alongside them. One detail most shops leave out: the official European herbal monograph covers hawthorn leaf with flower, not the berry. Berry products are sold as food supplements, not as registered herbal medicines. So read the label. Does it say berry, leaf and flower, or a blend? That tells you which tradition the product follows, and it explains why two hawthorn packs can look very different.
Forms and what the numbers on the pack mean
- Whole berry powder, roughly 400 to 540 mg per capsule. Closest to the dried fruit itself.
- Concentrated extracts, from 4:1 up to 20:1. Less material in the capsule for the same berry equivalent.
- Liquid extracts, including alcohol-free versions. Handy if you want to adjust the amount by the drop.
Large front-of-pack figures such as 2,500 mg or 6,000 mg almost always describe berry equivalent, not what is inside the capsule. A 20:1 extract at 125 mg can legally be labelled as 2,500 mg of hawthorn. A 450 mg powder capsule contains 450 mg of real berry. Neither is automatically better.
