What counts as a cholesterol supplement?

Accepted Answer

In practice it is a food supplement built around an ingredient with an approved wording for normal blood cholesterol. That group is small: plant sterols and stanols, oat and barley beta-glucan, glucomannan, and alpha-linolenic acid from plant oils. Alongside them sit products with omega-3, artichoke, bergamot, garlic or red yeast rice, which people buy for the same goal even though their permitted wording is different or absent. We label both groups clearly so you know which is which.

Which form should I choose?

How much of a difference is there between 0.8 g and 3 g of plant sterols?

Accepted Answer

Quite a lot, and it explains why one product asks for one tablet and another for three. At 0.8 g a day sterols may be described as contributing to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol. Only from 1.5 to 3 g a day does the stronger authorised wording apply, which says plant sterols have been shown to lower blood cholesterol and that high cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Check the amount per tablet before you compare prices.

How long before I see anything in a blood test?

Expect effects after two to three weeks of consistent daily use, and judge them with a retest after roughly six to twelve weeks. A test after a few days tells you very little, because normal day-to-day variation is larger than any early change. Take the product at the same moment each day, with a meal in the case of sterols. If nothing has moved after three months of consistent use, discuss it with your GP rather than doubling the dose.

Do omega-3 capsules lower cholesterol?

Accepted Answer

Not in the way sterols do. The approved wording for EPA and DHA is about normal heart function from 250 mg a day, and at higher intakes about normal blood triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are a different blood fat from LDL cholesterol, so omega-3 is a companion rather than a replacement. If your report shows raised triglycerides as well, look at the amount of EPA and DHA per capsule, and at our heart and blood vessel selection.

Can I combine plant sterols with statins?

The label answer is clear: if you take cholesterol-lowering medication, use added plant sterols only under medical supervision. That statement is required on these products, and it exists because your prescriber needs to know what else influences your results before adjusting anything. So the practical route is to bring the pack or the label to your GP or pharmacist and agree it first. Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own because you started a supplement.

Why is red yeast rice treated differently from other cholesterol supplements?

Accepted Answer

Because fermented red yeast rice can contain monacolins, compounds that behave like a medicine rather than a nutrient. That is why European rules on how much may appear in a food supplement are strict, and why some products are handled as medicines instead. We do not stock high-monacolin products that fall outside those rules, and we say so rather than leaving you to guess. If you already take a statin, red yeast rice is a combination to raise with your GP first.

Who should not take a high-dose plant sterol product?

Accepted Answer

These products are intended for people who need to control their blood cholesterol, and not for anyone else. Specific points from the required labelling: avoid more than 3 g of added sterols a day, they are not suitable for children under five, and people on cholesterol medication need medical supervision. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your GP or pharmacist first. Keep fruit and vegetables in your daily diet as well, because a high sterol intake can reduce carotenoid levels in the blood.
