Velvet bean, its L-dopa content and what the label really tells you
Mucuna pruriens is a climbing legume from tropical Asia and Africa. Ayurveda calls it kapikachhu, while labels often say velvet bean or cowhage. Supplements use the seed, because the seed naturally contains L-dopa, a compound the body can convert into dopamine. That makes mucuna unusual inside our herbs and plants range. Most botanicals there are gentle. This one behaves more like an active plant compound, so the label details matter more than usual.
We should be clear about the rules first. Mucuna carries no approved health claim in the UK or the EU. So we cannot tell you what it does for mood, drive, sleep or fertility, and no honest shop can. EFSA has also placed the seed in its Compendium of Botanicals, a reference list of plants that need extra care in food and supplements, because of that L-dopa content. You are buying a traditional Ayurvedic seed with a well-documented compound, not a proven effect.
The percentage on the label says more than the milligrams
Two products can both state 500 mg of mucuna and still deliver very different amounts of L-dopa. Plain milled seed powder holds only a few percent by weight. A standardised extract is concentrated to a stated level, usually 15 or 20 percent. So one small capsule of extract can carry more L-dopa than several grams of loose powder. Laboratory analyses of shop-bought mucuna products have found levodopa levels varying widely, sometimes far from what the label suggested. That is why we look at the stated percentage and the batch paperwork, never at the total milligrams alone.
