What is BioSilk?

BioSilk is a professional hair care brand from Farouk Systems, created in the 1980s by founder Farouk Shami. Every product is built around hydrolysed silk protein: silk broken into small pieces so it can bind to the hair rather than rinse away. Silk contains 17 of the 19 amino acids found in hair. The best known product is Silk Therapy Original, a leave-in serum for shine and frizz control, and the range grew from there into shampoos, conditioners, styling and heat protection.

How do I use Silk Therapy without my hair going greasy?

Start with a pea-sized drop, even on long hair. Shake the bottle first, because the formula separates and an unshaken dose behaves differently. Rub the drop between your palms, then work it from the mid-lengths to the ends. Keep it off the roots and scalp entirely, which is where nearly all greasy results come from. If your hair is fine, use it on dry hair after styling instead of on damp hair. You can always add a second drop.

Should I apply it to wet or dry hair?

Both work, and they give different results. On damp, towel-dried hair the serum spreads further and gives an even, smooth finish through the whole length before you blow-dry. On dry hair it works as a finisher: a tiny amount smoothed over the surface calms flyaways and adds shine at the end of the day. Thick or very frizzy hair usually prefers damp application. Fine hair usually prefers a small amount on dry ends only.

Is BioSilk Silk Therapy a heat protectant?

The serum adds slip and reduces friction, which helps when you brush and style, but it is not sold as a dedicated heat protectant and users disagree about how much it shields. If you straighten or curl regularly, use Thermal Shield, the spray BioSilk actually makes for that job, and keep the serum for smoothing and shine. Applying both is fine: spray the heat protection on damp hair, then finish with a drop of serum once the hair is dry.

Does BioSilk contain silicones, and can I use it with the curly girl method?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the classic Silk Therapy serums contain silicones. That is exactly why they smooth so quickly: silicone forms a thin film that reduces friction and reflects light. It is also why strict curly girl routines avoid them, since these films need a proper cleanse to come off. If you follow that method, this range is not the match for you. If you do not, simply wash with a normal shampoo often enough that residue does not build up.

Can I use BioSilk on coloured or bleached hair?

Yes. The serum is a leave-in smoothing product, not a chemical treatment, so it does not lift or shift colour. Bleached hair is porous and rough, which is the condition these serums handle well: less tangling, less breakage from brushing, more shine. BioSilk also makes a Color Therapy shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair. Keep expectations realistic: the serum improves how the hair looks and behaves, it does not restore the structure bleach removed.

What is the difference between BioSilk and CHI?

Both come from Farouk Systems and share the same founder, so the overlap is real. The simplest way to separate them: BioSilk is built around silk protein and is strongest on smoothing, shine and frizz, mostly through leave-in serums and Silk Therapy shampoos. CHI is broader, with a heavier focus on styling tools, thermal work and salon colour care. If your main issue is frizz and dull ends, BioSilk is the more direct answer.
