Vitals Liquid EPA/DHA (200 ml) contains liquid fish oil in its natural triglyceride form. Per serving of 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) the oil provides 2,300 mg of fish oil, including 370 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA. The oil has a natural lemon aroma, and you can take it pure or mix it into cold drinks or dishes. The liquid form is practical if you prefer not to swallow capsules, and with the included 5 ml measuring spoon you can easily tailor the serving for children from 3 years old or adults. At 2.5 ml per day, the bottle will last approximately 80 days.
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is an omega 3 fatty acid that naturally occurs in oily fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines, and in algae. In this product, EPA is derived from fish oil.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega 3 fatty acid that naturally occurs in oily fish, shellfish and crustaceans, and algae. In this product, DHA comes from fish oil.
Fats in food and in fish oil occur naturally as triglycerides. A triglyceride consists of three fatty acids bound to one glycerol molecule. For softgels, fish oil is often processed to increase the amount of EPA and DHA. With a liquid fish oil, this is not necessary as you can simply measure a larger amount of oil. Therefore, the fish oil in this formula remains in the natural triglyceride form.
Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats. They consist of a chain of carbon atoms with attached hydrogen atoms. Fatty acids are present in almost all fats and oils, from both animal and plant sources.
Fatty acids are categorised into saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids are commonly found in butter, cheese, meat, and coconut fat. Monounsaturated fatty acids are present in olive oil, avocado and nuts. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are found in oily fish, sunflower oil, linseed and walnuts. Omega 3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA belong to the polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Yes. The vegetable omega 3 fatty acid is called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and is found in, among others, linseed, chia seed, hemp seed and walnuts. EPA and DHA are also available from algae oil, a plant-based source. This product contains EPA and DHA from fish oil and is therefore not suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Fish oil is itself a fat, and EPA and DHA are fatty acids. Fats are naturally eaten together with other foods. For this reason, the manufacturer recommends taking the oil with a meal that contains fat, such as a meal with fish, meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts or a dish prepared with oil or butter. This matches the properties of fish oil as a source of fat.
