For nutrients the logic is different: vitamin C and zinc support normal immune function through your regular intake, so daily use across a season makes more sense than a single big dose on a bad day. Expect to judge a nutrient after two to three weeks of consistent use.

Can I take vitamin C and zinc together?

Yes, and many products combine them. Both have their own approved role in normal immune function, and we keep those roles separate: taking them together does not create a bigger or faster effect than each on its own. Two practical points. Zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea, so take it with food. And high doses of different minerals at the same time can compete for absorption, so space zinc a few hours apart from iron or calcium supplements.

Are these supplements suitable for children?

Some are, but only the ones dosed for children. Drops and syrups are the usual choice, because you can measure a smaller amount and they are easier to take than a capsule. Always follow the age range on the label rather than halving an adult dose, since children need much less zinc and vitamin A than adults. Lozenges are generally not given to young children because of the choking risk.

Why do herbal throat products not make any promises?

Because the rules do not allow it. Health claims for botanicals such as sage, thyme, elderberry and propolis have not been authorised in the EU, so no shop may say what they do, however long the tradition behind them. We would rather tell you that plainly than dress it up in vague wording. Products with vitamin C, zinc or vitamin A do carry an approved claim, so if you want something verifiable on the label, start there.

Is there anything to be careful about with these supplements?

Three things. First, zinc adds up quickly if you take several lozenges a day, and long-term high intakes can affect copper levels, so keep an eye on the daily total. Second, in the UK pregnant women are advised to avoid supplements containing vitamin A, and liver as well, because too much can be harmful. Third, if you take prescribed medicines, check with your pharmacist. A food supplement never replaces a varied diet or medical advice.

Does the type of zinc in a lozenge matter?

Accepted Answer

It does, and this is where most labels stay quiet. Research on zinc lozenges has mainly used zinc acetate and zinc gluconate, so those are the forms we prefer to stock in this category. Also look at the elemental zinc per lozenge, not the weight of the compound: 50 mg of zinc gluconate is not 50 mg of zinc. Some people notice a metallic taste or mild mouth irritation from lozenges, which passes once you stop.
