What exactly is a shampoo bar?

Why does my hair feel waxy after using a shampoo bar?

Almost always hard water plus a soap-based bar. The soap reacts with calcium and magnesium in the water and forms a scum, the same film you see on shower screens, which coats the hair and does not rinse away. Switching to a pH-balanced surfactant bar usually solves it in one wash. If you want to keep your soap bar, a diluted acidic rinse after washing helps, and lukewarm rather than very hot water rinses more cleanly.

Is there really a transition phase when you switch?

Not for every bar. With a pH-balanced surfactant bar most people see normal, clean hair from the first wash, because it cleanses like the shampoo they already used. A genuine adjustment period is more common with soap-based bars, and with hair carrying heavy silicone build-up, which a mild bar does not remove immediately. Give any new bar three or four washes before you judge it, and rinse longer than you think you need to.

How long does one bar last, and how should I store it?

Expect roughly two to three months of regular washing for medium-length hair, and less if your hair is long, thick or washed daily. Storage decides much of that. Water sitting on the bar dissolves it, so keep it outside the direct shower spray on a draining dish or tin with holes, and let it dry between washes. Rubbing the bar between wet hands, rather than dragging it through hair, also uses less product.

Are there shampoo bars for coloured, blonde or grey hair?

Yes. Colour-treated hair generally does better with a mild, pH-balanced bar, since alkaline soap opens the hair cuticle and colour fades faster. For blonde, silver and grey hair there are toning bars with violet pigment that counter brassy tones, the solid equivalent of the purple toning shampoos you may already use. Use a toning bar once or twice a week and a gentle bar for the other washes.

A shampoo bar is a cosmetic product. Before it can be sold in Great Britain, its safety must be assessed by a qualified safety assessor in a Cosmetic Product Safety Report, a Responsible Person based in the UK or EU must be named, and the product must be notified to the Office for Product Safety and Standards. On the pack, look for the full ingredient list in English, the Responsible Person's address, a batch number and either a best before date or a period-after-opening symbol.
