Vitamins, minerals or plant extracts are then dosed into that base. The base decides whether a product suits vegans, and how firm the chew stays in a warm room.
What fits in a gummy and what does not
Space per chew is limited, so this form suits nutrients with small daily amounts. Vitamin D3, vitamin B12, biotin, zinc and vitamin C fit comfortably. Higher-dose minerals do not. To reach 300 mg of elemental magnesium you would chew a handful, which is why magnesium in powder or capsules stays the practical route. Iron and bitter plant extracts are also hard to hide behind fruit flavour, so you rarely see them here.
Reading the label before the flavour
Check whether the nutrient amounts on the label apply to one gummy or to a daily serving of two or three. That difference doubles or triples both the nutrients and the sugar. Then look at the %NRV, the reference intake percentage, so you can see how much of a day's needs one serving actually covers. Pack size matters too: 60 chews at two per day is a one-month supply, not two.
Sugar, sweeteners and your teeth
Most gummies are sweetened with glucose syrup or sugar. Sugar-free versions use sugar alcohols such as maltitol or xylitol, which can loosen the stools when you take several chews a day. NHS guidance is to avoid supplements containing vitamin A as retinol during pregnancy, because too much can harm the baby's development. Several multivitamin and beauty gummies include retinol, so read the ingredients list rather than the front label. Beta-carotene, the plant form, is not covered by that warning. Folic acid and vitamin D are the two supplements the NHS does advise in pregnancy, and both are available as chews. When in doubt, check with your midwife or GP.
