How fizzy vitamin tablets work, and who they suit
An effervescent tablet is a pressed powder that reacts the moment it meets water. Citric acid and sodium bicarbonate come together, release carbon dioxide, and the tablet falls apart. What you drink is a solution, so the vitamins and minerals are already dissolved before they reach your stomach.
Dissolving helps, but only for the right nutrients
Your body does not have to break a tablet down first. That suits water-soluble nutrients: vitamin C, the B vitamins, and mineral salts such as potassium and magnesium in hydration drinks. It is not the right carrier for everything. Oils such as omega-3 cannot be pressed into a fizzy tablet, and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are usually taken with a meal that contains some fat. The sodium and acidity trade-off
The fizz has to come from somewhere. Most effervescent tablets use sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate, so every tablet adds a little sodium to your day. On a normal diet that is rarely a problem. If you keep an eye on salt, read the nutrition panel instead of assuming a supplement contains none. The drink is also acidic because of the citric acid. Finish your glass within a short time rather than sipping it all morning, and follow it with plain water.

This is a practical choice rather than a better one. It works well for:
- people who find swallowing tablets or capsules difficult
- anyone who forgets a pill but not a drink, for example a daily glass with Vitamin C at breakfast
- training, hot weather or travel, where electrolyte drinks replace fluid and salts you lose through sweat
- households that prefer one shared tube to several bottles of pills
Be honest about the cost: price per dose is usually higher than a plain tablet, and a tube takes up more room than a blister strip. What you get back is a dose you will actually take, which matters more than the theoretical strength of a pill sitting unopened in a cupboard.
Keep expectations realistic as well. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, and vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Those effects come from taking a nutrient consistently, not from one fizzy glass, so give any new routine two to three weeks before you judge it. Store the tube tightly closed, because these tablets react to moisture in the air as readily as they do to water.

They start from an advantage: the nutrient is already dissolved, so your stomach does not have to break down a compressed tablet first. That can mean a faster start, especially for water-soluble nutrients. It does not automatically mean you absorb more in total. For most vitamins a plain tablet taken with food ends up in much the same place. The bigger practical gain is that people who dislike swallowing pills actually take their dose.
Choose by nutrient first, then by what you will keep doing daily. If swallowing is the obstacle, this format or tablets you chew both solve it.

Drop one tablet into a glass or bottle of water, roughly 200 to 500 ml, and wait until the fizzing stops. Undissolved bits mean part of your dose is still stuck to the glass, so stir briefly and drink the lot. Most labels say to drink the prepared solution within 24 hours, so make it fresh rather than in the morning for the evening. Use water, not hot drinks, since heat is hard on vitamin C.
It varies by product, so check the nutrition panel; the carbonate that creates the fizz is usually a sodium salt. To judge whether it matters, compare it with the UK daily reference for salt.

Most sold in the UK are sugar-free and use sweeteners such as sucralose, acesulfame K or steviol glycosides, plus sorbitol as a bulking agent. Some also contain small amounts of glucose or citrus flavour. If you avoid a particular sweetener, the ingredient list is the only reliable place to check, since front-of-tube wording differs per brand. Sorbitol in larger amounts can loosen the stools in sensitive people.
Less than the numbers on many tubes suggest. A 1000 mg vitamin C tablet is well above the daily reference, and the surplus is largely passed in urine. That is not harmful for most people, but it is worth knowing what you pay for.

Only products labelled for their age group, and at the dose on that label. Adult tablets are formulated for adult bodies, both in nutrient amounts and in sodium, and half a tablet is not a reliable way to halve a dose because the fizz makes it hard to split evenly. Children also have lower daily salt references than adults. For younger children a chewable or a drop is often the simpler choice.
Two different causes. Cloudiness or grit at the bottom usually comes from ingredients that do not fully dissolve, such as calcium carbonate or certain mineral forms; stir and drink it rather than pouring it away. Weak fizzing points to moisture. These tablets react with humidity in the air, so an open tube in a steamy bathroom slowly starts the reaction early. Keep tubes closed, dry and at room temperature, and leave the desiccant cap in place.
