What SAMe actually is
SAMe is short for S-adenosyl-L-methionine. Your body makes it itself, from the amino acid methionine and ATP, the fuel your cells run on. In the body it works as a methyl donor: it passes small carbon groups from one molecule to another. Food contains almost no usable SAMe, so every product here is made by fermentation and then stabilised.

Salt form and coating decide the quality
Pure SAMe breaks down quickly when it meets moisture, heat and light. Makers therefore bind it into a salt and protect the tablet. That is where real differences between products sit:
- Tosylate disulfate: the most widely used stable salt, found in most 200 mg and 400 mg tablets.
- Butanedisulfonate: another stabilised salt, used by some brands at the same strengths.
- Enteric coating: a layer that only dissolves in the intestine, so stomach acid does not break the SAMe down first.
- Blister packaging: each tablet sealed on its own, so opening the pack does not expose the rest to air.
Labels can confuse. Some state the weight of the whole salt, others the SAMe inside it. Look for a clearly stated amount of SAMe per tablet.

Practical use, and the honest bits
Most brands advise taking SAMe on an empty stomach, roughly 30 minutes before food. Many people prefer the morning, because some find it noticeably activating later in the day. Keep the pack dry, cool and closed; a few brands ask for refrigeration once opened, so read the tub or blister.
SAMe is often used next to vitamin B12 products, because B12 takes part in the same methylation cycle in the body. That is biochemistry, not a promise, and combining does not make either one work harder.
Be prepared for the price. Stabilised SAMe is expensive to produce and to protect, which makes it one of the pricier single supplements you will find. That is fair value if you specifically want this molecule and have read up on it, or discussed it with your GP. It is not a first supplement for someone just starting out; a basic vitamin or mineral is a simpler place to begin.
Two practical cautions. If you take prescription medicines, especially antidepressants, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the same applies. And give any supplement two to four weeks of consistent use before you judge it, taken at the same time each day.

What is the difference between 200 mg and 400 mg tablets?
Only the amount of SAMe per tablet, provided the label states SAMe rather than total salt weight. Some labels quote the whole salt, which is heavier than the SAMe inside it, so two products showing the same number can differ. Practically, 200 mg tablets let you build up gradually or split your intake across the day, while 400 mg tablets mean fewer tablets and usually a lower cost per milligram. Follow the dosage on the pack.
When is the best time of day to take SAMe?
Most brands say on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before eating, because food and stomach contents interfere with absorption. Morning is the common choice, since a number of people describe SAMe as activating and prefer not to take it close to bedtime. If you split your intake, keep the second portion well before the evening. Consistency matters more than perfect timing: same moment, every day, for a few weeks.
Does it make sense to combine SAMe with B vitamins?
SAMe, vitamin B12 and folate all take part in the same methylation cycle, so people often keep them together in one routine. That is a factual biochemical link, not a claim that the combination does more for your health. If you want to cover that side properly, the folate range is where to look, ideally as the active methylfolate form. Keep changes one at a time so you can tell what does what.
How should I store SAMe, and how long does an open pack last?
Cool, dry and closed, away from the bathroom and away from windowsills. Warmth and humidity are what degrade SAMe fastest. Blisters protect themselves; a tub does not, so close it firmly straight after use and keep any desiccant sachet inside. Several brands advise refrigerating a tub once opened, so follow the pack rather than a general rule. If tablets smell strongly sulphurous or look discoloured, they are past their best.
